The use of roofing material has varied from place to place over the centuries. One of the most enduring and appealing of these materials was natural clay; which was desirable for its mellow appearance and weathering properties.

Its unique ability to be pressed into a multitude of shapes and designs enhanced its popularity and enables designers to create an endless array of decorative roofs through the inclusion of ornate finials, ridges and hips. In the 17 - 19th century family homes were often constructed to include custom-made features which reflected the occupants taste and personal wealth.

Family homes would be passed down through generations and individuality within a style in keeping with the overall local dialect was of great importance
